If you're reading this, please so I can get back to being federated with the . Unfortunately, the data center I've been hosting with for years and years encountered some serious issues. I had to move suddenly, losing almost everything. I took the chance to change the software I use. But I've still lost all of my followers, all of my federation, etc! It's also taken down rblind.com, my passion project to get more folks off . I'll be bringing that back over the coming days. In the meantime, hi! I'm a blind guy who uses the , loves and works in the field, and reads tons of , , and and in my spare time. Nice to meet you!

@NVAccess Sort of, but I'm still in progress on making infrastructure changes to make sure this doesn't happen again. So there'll be more downtime related to that in a couple weeks. But it'll be hours, not days.

Wow, sorry for your loss but I keep saying it. Self hosting!!!

Our Beamship has been running on a laptop for over 2 years and still kicking 😁 our biggest problem is the 1 taro drive is to small but it proves that anybody can Self-Host.

@bob The reason I host my stuff in a data center is because my ISP doesn't offer IPV6 yet, but does place customers behind a carrier grade NAT. So I can't forward ports to myself reliably. I do keep the off-site backups in my basement. Unfortunately, Pleroma wasn't backing up propperly.

I'm hosting on the new C# version of because I believe we need far, far more fediverse servers implemented from scratch than we currently have. Also, I like DotNet as a concept, enjoy C#, and it's just me on this instance, so running things that aren't yet battle tested is okay. I also like the first way they seem to work.

@allypally Thanks! I’ve ended up with more followers than I had before, so it all worked out. Favorite author? While I loathe his politics, I find myself partial to Heinlein. The guy knew how to tell a story. Same for Spider Robinson and Isaac Asimov.

If you're curious, the data center in question is Accuris Hosting (accuris.ca). They've been down for a week now, and have been radio silent to all customers. I've heard from there upstream that they're in a payment dispute and were disconnected, screwing everyone leasing IP's or bandwidth from them.

I'm in the process of moving to . They're in , but still have excellent connectivity to . If you're wondering why I moved from one provider you've never heard of to another provider you've never heard of: I insist on hosting in , and I refuse to host with big teck like or . I don't know the guys at ServaRICA, but...they seem...fine I guess. Then again, I was thrilled with for years. So I dunno.

@fastfinge Good luck. They have no rescue console as far as I know. When my server died, the power buttons disappeared from the control panel, and the only thing I could do is contact support.

@modulux All the things I host are hobbies. If I was a business I'd honestly probably go with the Amazon or Microsoft clouds. But I'm not, so why not spend the couple hundred bucks a month I spend on hosting things to vote with my wallet, as they say. I want to see more small businesses, I want the Internet to be less centralized, and going with small Canadian companies for my hosting is a tiny, probably insignificant, way I can try to make more of that happen.

@fastfinge Yay, I wouldn't like to host with certain companies either. I don't mind the local part as much, but I prefer to contract with people not doing dodgy stuff. So I am hosting with OVH but wouldn't like using MS or Amazon or Google. Then again, I guess you can say EU is local of a sort.

@modulux I mean, based on some of the reviews I've read of OVH, I'm not sure if they're any less dodgy than the bigger companies. Then again, I was with Accuris for years, a company that I now find out has been doing everything in its power to screw there upstream peers and violate their peering agreements. So maybe I'm not a good judge.

@fastfinge Oh, their tech support is definitely pretty much "you have root, you fix it." And they did have a very unfortunate fire in a data centre a couple years ago I think. Overall they seem alright to me, they give what they promise.

@modulux Good to know! If I ever need a server outside of Canada, I'd probably pick them. I'd like to avoid doing business with an American hosting company as much as possible. So they'd be a good way to get a server in the US if I ever needed that.

@fastfinge I avoid every opportunity to go to where my stuff is running. In part because most of my clients are 20 hours away in different directions.
But yes, I understand the allure of facing the option to take an ax to a misbehaving server. Or having the option.

@alexhall Honestly it's fine if you're reading and commenting. My bitterness comes from the way they screwed those of us who are moderators. If you post on /r/blind it now takes ages for your post to be approved. And that's entirely because of the way Reddit broke the accessibility of mod tools, and discontinued the Reddit API, so no third party app could make it better.

@fastfinge I can understand that. I'm still mad at them for the whole API thing last year. I'd move if I could, but I've found too many helpful communities on there. Fandoms to book genres to instruments and more, all in an interface that's incredibly easy and efficient thanks to the Dystopia app. I don't know how to replace it, both in terms of how I access the information and where the majority hang out. I wish the majority of users had cared last year and found a new home.

@thegnuguy Oh gosh! There are so many good ones. Depends on my mood. Comedy, realism, erotica, crossover, etc. in general though, I avoid wrong bwl, Draco or snape redemption fics, and m/m. But I read almost anything else! The hp/mlp crossover if wishes were horses is a fun cozy one for the holidays.
