The primary reason is that it's much easier not to get on fediverse blocklists; nobody is blocking entire IP ranges, yet. And most of the public servers have one or more policies that I disagree with. Unlike an email server, fediverse posts are public, and your administrator will have rules about what and how you can post. So IMHO it's quite different.
