completely blind computer geek, lover of science fiction and fantasy (especially LitRPG). I work in accessibility, but my opinions are my own, not that of my employer. Fandoms: Harry Potter, Discworld, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Buffy, Dead Like Me, Glee, and I'll read fanfic of pretty much anything that crosses over with one of those.

@menelion Yup. It's a buck a month for the basics. And it allows anyone to log in via mastodon or bluesky to comment.

So I ended up going with micro.blog. I don't love that it's American. But it stores my stuff in Europe, it's easy to export and back-up the blog if I have to move elsewhere, it does cross-posting, and it lets me centralize a bunch of other stuff (like my bookmarks formerly on tinygem and my to-read list formerly on goodreads). Hence the name: stuff.interfree.ca

Ongoing investigation:
*
looks good, but depends on firebase and versal, so doesn't let me avoid big tech
*
requires mailgun, more big american tech

Can we literally not host a federated blog on our own servers without big American tech companies involved? At least micro.blog is a small American tech company, so they might be the way I have to go. Or just, you know, not do this at all.

@MostlyBlindGamer That requires both Google Firebase and something called versal that I've never heard of and can't host myself. If I'm doing business with big american tech I might as well just use micro.blog directly.

@crmsnbleyd I'd like to federate, and get replies pulled in as comments. So that won't work.

@MostlyBlindGamer It's static, so it can't federate.

@serrebi What problems did you have with it?

Never mind, I thought you could micro.blog. Apparently not. I don't do business with American companies when I could host myself. So they're out.

If I decide to start blogging again (it's been years), what's more : ghost or micro.blog or something else? Don't even mention ; my desire to run a PHP app for any reason is zero. Plus the gutenberg stuff.

I heard back from support promptly. They’re investigating.

@jeremyjanzen Yeah. I just need to borrow a sighted human to help me deal with an inaccessible checkout process. It’s not urgent until allergy season starts so I’ll give them a few weeks.

Continued updates on my innosearch testing: I have still heard nothing. I submitted a support request via the contact us form just now.

@dhamlinmusic I have no idea what the heck they meant. Clicking took me to SEO spam about nutritional supplements. I assume they sell protein powder with the ability to make me so fit I'll retroactively become buff in 2006.

Ad spam I just got: "How to cancel goodlife membership in 2006". If only this was an add for a time machine.

@RegGuy Yup. You can press f9 in Firefox or edge and it pops right up.

@RegGuy Yup. Also, for the same reason Reader Mode in google chrome is locked behind a flag in about:config that's off by default, when you turn it on it only shows up deep in two menus, it doesn't have a hotkey, and when you do get it turned on it doesn't work as well as the ones in Edge, Safari, and Firefox. Reader Mode hides ads.

For anyone who uses these days, is there a replacement for the UI sounds extension? It hasn't been updated to support the new extension API. Sadly I have situations that require Chrome.

Update on : two days later, I have the order confirmation email, but no delivery or shipping info, or even a delivery estimate. I'm not impressed so far. However, it's way too soon to make a final judgement. I will contact support on Monday if I haven't gotten any updates.

@RegGuy LOL, could be. Or maybe stress factors effecting advanced spatial awareness and attention. Like yesterday my headphone wire got wrapped around a bowl of grapes on my desk, knocking it off before I noticed the problem. And I knocked over a glass of water while reaching to pick up my phone. I wasn't anxious or anything, and I normally would have noticed both of those things.
