completely blind computer geek, lover of science fiction and fantasy (especially LitRPG). I work in accessibility, but my opinions are my own, not that of my employer. Fandoms: Harry Potter, Discworld, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Buffy, Dead Like Me, Glee, and I'll read fanfic of pretty much anything that crosses over with one of those.

@jscholes It might be possible to fix this by re-ordering the fields in the JSON object. I suspect what’s happening here is that Tweesecake is assuming the JSON has a guaranteed order, when it does not. Mastodon just happens to order it one way, and Iceshrimp orders the fields differently.

@jscholes For clients that support it, we provide formatted text, so the link is actually not just a url. Tweesecake is showing you the formatted version of the post, even though it only supports plain text.

@mcourcel Yup, my cat is the same. She always asks to be fed at 8 AM. She’s never off by more than five minutes. Accept when the time changes and it takes her a week to adjust.

@lowrah Also I don’t always remember to look for it, because only about 50 percent of people put alt text for profile images in there profiles at all.

@lowrah It would help. But all of these solutions are stopgaps until fedi standardizes on a way to have alt text on profile images.

@lowrah It was! I wasn’t trying to call you out in any way, though. It was just an interesting example of a wider problem. I’m happy to change your first name in my original post if you’d like.

So here's a perfect example of the issues with . Yes, it's usually better than nothing. But here's a case where it isn't: I have Microsoft Edge set up to give me automatic alt text when it's missing. The alt-text it gave for a profile image reads "Appears to be: Taika Waititi." My first thought is: Huh? Who? I have no idea who this is, and the profile in question is for someone named Laura, so it's deeply unlikely to be Taika Waititi, whomever they may be. So now I'm left with the incorrect name of someone (hopefully a public figure?) I don't know, and no information about anything actually in the image. AI can't understand that I've never heard of Taika Waititi, that the name directly underneath the image reads "Laura", that the image is a profile picture, and put all these things together to generate contextually correct alt-text.

Yay, my commits to .net to improve some were merged! Now it's just the dropdown menus to fix. Not that I use the frontend myself; I'd rather third party apps like . Still, though, I enjoyed setting up a dev environment and learning a bit about , and think I'll use it for another project I'm half way through starting.
