@bram @matt Yeah, the other reason that makes me reluctant to move all of my coding over to Hermes is memory contamination. I like that Hermes can remember and reference all of the random things hindsight has stored about me in the memory layer; it's useful when I ask it random questions at 2 AM, or want it to remind me of something, or describe an image for me, or whatever. But when I'm working on a codebase, the fact that I live in Ottawa or that I like Lit RPG sometimes gets injected into the context by the memory layer, and that is useless and actively harmful to the current task. Yeah, I could make a new Hermes profile per project, and then they'd each have different memory banks and everything else, but that's a lot of overhead. The way Claude Code and Codex handle it is much more sensible for programming tasks. But, of course, on the other hand, the fact that Hermes remembers my tooling and environment preferences is extremely useful when what I want is a quick one-off script. I don't have to remind it what I have installed, that I want uvx when possible, that we're on Debian, etc. If I start a new Claude or Codex project, they have to re-discover all that stuff every time, when all I needed was a quick 150 line script.

@SecureOwl Sometimes I think half the reason AI gets things done so fast is because we give it better tools. Imagine if, just as a treat, human programmers could have project management and task tracking software carefully designed for our needs and to work with our tools? Nah. It'll never happen.

@Orinks @matt If you don't run your own nostr relay, you depend on there servers and infrastructure for accounts, etc. You can set up your own relay though. They've just made it an annoying process so you don't.

@Orinks @matt It took me like two days to set up a relay. Getting Hermes into it was easy. But adding the other agents was super annoying. And then when you set up your own relay, notifications on the phone app don't work. If it's not self-hosted first, I'm just not interested. And it looks like buzz is only pretending.

@Orinks @matt The nice thing about Hermes is that you can use it on your phone, without being locked into some particular company's app. It can also access your memories from other sessions; I use hindsight for memory storage and rag. It can also be configured to shell coding tasks out to claude code or codex via the command line. The only issue I have with it is that there's no easy way to get it to run code on a remote machine. Well, okay, there is: it can ssh into another Linux machine, and I let it do that sometimes. But if I want to build and test on Windows, Hermes just can't help me. I'm looking into buzz for this purpose, but Buzz has other annoying accessibility issues.

@matt I currently use Hermes Agent with it to handle server monitoring, network diagnostics, troubleshooting, and basic admin tasks. I also use it with Hermes Agent to produce and handle batch scripts and services: a lightning strike monitor that sends me notifications when lightning is near, a security monitor that emails me new vulns for anything I run, a price checker that checks prices at my local grocery store and sends me any significant downward changes, a speedtest monitor, uptime monitors, and various other jobs. I'm working on moving stuff over to opencode for coding on Windows; right now Hermes can only run code on mac or Linux, so is of no use for the Windows projects I have in the pipeline. I do use Hermes to maintain my hermes-xmpp plugin and submit changes to the hermes-deltachat plugins with K3, because it can easily run and test both of those codebases.

@matt @jonathan859 That question isn’t all that meaningful. Kimi k3 can run on a Mac mini and is about as good as gpt4. With an OpenAI compatible endpoint you can then do whatever you want. But I suspect “run a separate computer just for AI” may not have been what you meant. But I’ve moved eighty percent of what I do to k3. But that’s more running the server myself, not running a local model on my laptop.

And just a couple minutes after my last post my doorbell rang. I figured by the time I got all the way around to the front of the house they’d be gone. But no. It was someone who sounded like a woman in her 20s with some kind of slightly Spanish accent. She was asking me to donate money to a charity for children with cleft pallets. Random and oddly specific. I asked if they had a website. She said no. I declined to give her money. Is it a full moon? Because tonight has been unusually strange. Must be the heat.

Electric guitar man has given up on his playing. He’s decided to instead loudly listen to what sounds like the worlds longest and most generic psychedelic rock. Just one endless boring instrumental song with drums and incomprehensible guitar riffs. I liked the llama song better. One of the pool preteens was heard to complain “shut up! I’m not a vergin! I’ll beat your ass!” My guy. Puberty hasn’t even come for you yet. I hope to god you are a vergin. The poodle continues to bark excitedly about all of this.

How come all the interesting things happen when I don’t have a recording app handy? Tonight four or five houses down from me a man is playing an electric guitar badly and singing off key. The song apparently goes “llama llama llama, I like llama. Llama love. Oh yeah!” This has excited my neighbors tiny poodle and he is barking opinionatedly about it. And across the street the pool is full of preteens doing something that requires a good deal of screaming and splashing. It’s a hell of a summer soundscape. If only I had some stereo microphones out here.

So according to Reddit, the Soviets had something called the Fonemophone-4 speech synthesizer, based on the Elektronika-60 computer, developed between 1978 and 1991. C'mon, #nvda and #tts guys. Where's my Fonemophone-4 NVDA addon? All you'd have to do is emulate an Elektronika-60; hardware emulation is already being done for Dectalk and Speech Proes and Keynote Gold, so this is a solved problem, right? @simon Yeah, it does. Ducking kind of works only sometimes. Using the volume keys on a headset sometimes gives loud blasts of voiceover. Sometimes voiceover changes volumes randomly. When they seperated the notification and ringtone volumes, they messed up TTS audio. Note that this also affects sighted people. I was riding in the car with a friend who also runs the beta but has never used voiceover, and sometimes, for no apparent reason, the maps navigation voice would blast over carplay at full volume. Other times, it would be so quiet he could hardly hear the turn by turn instructions. Sometimes it would remember to turn down his music when announcing turn by turn, sometimes it wouldn't, sometimes it seemed like the music got louder and the voice didn't. So I suspect this will get fixed, as it's a problem for any and all tts, not just voiceover. @bill

Sometimes I hate being a #blind person. I went out to the local Dairy Queen for an ice cream. Of course, because it's hot, the place is packed and the line is enormously long. As I'm standing there waiting for my blizzard, I hear a loud female voice, apparently in conversation with someone else, say "WELL, FUCK YOU! I HAVE OPINIONS ABOUT PROTOCOLS!" I would have given anything to be able to make eye contact with this person and nod. Because I also have opinions about protocols. And obviously this means that we're destined to get married and have XMPP compatible children who we can raise to follow XHTML 1.1 strict. Anyway, my inability to make eye contact or figure out how to insert myself into whatever that conversation was obviously cost me my future wife and any chance at happiness. Note: Yes, I'm joking. But still. If you were at the DQ in Riverside South in Ottawa at around 6:40 PM and remember saying this, and are part of the fediverse, please do get in contact. Yes, I'm fully aware you're not, and you don't, and you were probably talking about, I dunno, ambassadors or something. I have a blizzard to drown my sorrows; I'll be fine.
