@fastfinge Its a pity about the Ubiquity, I didn't realize their UI would be unuseable. They've been on my list of wi-fi access points to investigate for a long time.
@fastfinge@neurrone@BorrisInABox Ubiquiti isn't unusable (at least with a screen reader). The web UI isn't winning any awards but you can get the job done, and there's an iOS app that I personally use for a lot of stuff.
The controller app may or may not still be written in Java, i'm not sure. But you operated exclusively via the web UI, mobile app, API and SSH. So other than for performance related reasons when hosting your own, the tech stack doesn't matter and has no impact on accessibility.
as for the accessibility of the web UI, it's probably one of those things that's more accessible with a screen reader than it otherwise would be with e.g. keyboard only. There are lots of things that should be marked up as semantic controls like links, buttons, etc. that aren't and so they probably can't be tabbed to, but their functions are mostly obvious and they can be clicked with a screen reader running.
The most inaccessible part of the whole ecosystem, across both the web UI and mobile apps, is probably the data visualisations for bandwidth usage and the like. Much of the info can be read in other ways . though
@jscholes@fastfinge@neurrone@BorrisInABox Yeah in most cases the gateways come with their own controller. Only if you have a specific use case is it best to install a controller elsewhere. I'm relatively happy with my Dream Machine I got 5 years ago, though probably need to update at some point to WiFi 7. As James says, the iOS app is actually fairly decent these days and I can do what i need to on that.
@andrew@jscholes@fastfinge@neurrone My friend, who does a lot of Ubiquiti deployment in various places, is not particularly enamored with the U7 Pro, still recommends the older U6 Pro and Mesh access points. He says they are performing better. He hasn’t messed with the latest enterprise stuff yet, though. No idea how, or if, this translates to the latest dream machine stuff. I am about to finally upgrade my old Edgerouter to a UDM Pro along with a couple of flex switches.
@BorrisInABox@jscholes@fastfinge@neurrone Yeah the latest gateway upgrades didn't fit the box for me. I'm still looking at a UDM Pro SE with a U6 Mesh. UDM Pro hardware although its been around for a while seems really stable. Don't want to get integrated wireless again.
@BorrisInABox@jscholes@fastfinge@neurrone Its arguable for this small flat anything other than a single box is overkill, but I would rather upgrade the router and AP separately, plus where I want to put the AP isn't in the same place as where the router lives. I also would rather have a rack mount style unit that I can put on a shelf rather than the cylindrical unit that is the original Dream Machine or the Dream Routers.
@fastfinge@jscholes@neurrone@BorrisInABox You can get a router which will run the controller software for ytou if you don't want to dockerize it. After that, anything you add just pops up. I'd also talk with @coffee_nebula as he's done the most work with our setup. The Android app is accessible, I don't know about IOS but I believe it works fine.
