@fastfinge it should have told you the gestures for home and such, you can use actions to dismiss notifications from the lock screen so something must be being stupid, if you need help just message me here or on Discord.

@dhamlinmusic @fastfinge You could eventually go to settings, find the gestures settings and tell the gesture to screw off, sighted people also dislike it, so the buttons are good for you. Message me or mention me here if you need help, also, what phone did you get? :)

@fastfinge I could never use Android as a primary, one of the reasons being that TalkBack is not as smooth when reaching the bottom of an app or website screen and on iPhone, VoiceOver will automatically move focus to the next item and the screen will follow the cursor. Nope, TalkBack literally has to scroll the screen before focusing on the next item, and its infuriating as you have to wait for about a second, slightly less, but never the less you have to wait for the dink dink sounds to stop before it highlights the next thing and reads it. So more often than not, back when I did have a Pixel as my primary, I would instinctively use explore by touch and manually scroll the screen with the 2 finger gesture. Oh an in some cases, the auto scrolling BS TalkBack does would sometimes miss a few things and jump further down than it needs to, meaning if you're not used to this behavior you'll miss some stuff.
As for TTS voices, since Eloquence most likely won't work on the Pixel, you could try the DECtalk for Android.

@fastfinge Oh oof. That is one of the most enfuriating things I wish Google would fix with TalkBack, but they won't. I don't know what they've updated for TalkBack 16 or the Android 16 beta in terms of this stuff, but I doubt they've suddenly fixed these issues unfortunately.

@fastfinge I haven't used CSR in years, so I wouldn't know. Prudence has actions support but if you want a gesture, I think you manually have to set that in Prudence settings.

@fastfinge @alexchapman it does now, it has for a wile now, the roter just doesn't auto switch to them so you have to do it your selff, also i don't remember if it tells you acctions are available, if it doesn't that's bad for a new user

@fastfinge in reading this entry, yes you can turn off things like raise to wake, and touch to wake. I have mine set that way as I absolutely hate my phone waking up that easy. as far as the notifications. that is the one thing I personally think apple got right. there are a couple other things that are the same on android, like answering a call, you can use the two finger double tap to answer, and ending the call as well. the two finger double tap can also pause your music too in most apps if I am not mistaken. if you have questions. you can ask, and as long as I know the answers, I will help you as much as I can.

@JamminJerry My biggest struggle right now is that explore by touch just completely stops working every 30 minutes or so. I have to lock the phone and unlock it again to make it start working. It’s infuriating. I can’t even type when it happens because only flick works. That and talk back is just! So! Slow! 1.5 seconds to scroll a list. Lag when typing. Etc. I thought Google tts was the issue, so I switched to espeak. No change. Voiceover is faster on my iPhone 8. What can I do to make talk back actually responsive? Because this is killing me.

@fastfinge I don't ever have issues with the explore by touch not working like that. that is just crazy! I mean ok, I have the 9 pro XL and yours is the 9A, but there shouldn't be that much of a difference.

@JamminJerry I’m not sure what’s up, swipe works fine. I could even swipe my way through the keyboard if I wanted. But explore by touch just quits and stops responding.

@fastfinge I do get what you mean that voiceover is more responsive. I use the alix voice, and even that 900 meg voice is still more responsive than anything on android. yes eloquence, ESpeak, vocalizer, and things like that are more responsive than the google tts any day, but eloquence you can't even get or put on more modorn phones sadly. but I mean, I could record a demo for you to show you that my stuff isn't even that slow when I do things. that is just crazy!

@fastfinge you could try that to see if that fixes it. if that doesn't fix the screen freezing, I almost wonder if the screen is messed up or something? I could ask the blind android users telegram group if anyone has seen that before, and I bet it would be a resounding no. lol.

@JamminJerry Yeah so I’m trying csr or whatever it’s called now. With it, explore by touch sometimes freezes for a few seconds but it comes back without me needing to do anything. It’s also significantly faster. So something is obviously wrong with my talk back.

@fastfinge CSR is more responsive than talkback, and it is a whole lot more configurable, especially if you pay for the subscription. that is kind of a pain, but it id doable, and once you do, you get access to more stuff.

I also wish there was a different licensing skeme so that you didn't have to eamil him when you wanted to change phones, and when you paid him threw paypal. believe me I get it, but you have to admit it is one hell of a screen reader.

@JamminJerry @fastfinge Right? What I mentioned is my only problem. The way things are handled. When I switched phones it literally took a week before my darn thing got activated. Now when I had to do computer surgery, I activated my jaws immediately because we're allowed to do that for ourselves, which is the right way to handle this sort of thing

@JamminJerry @fastfinge Right? Also voice typing is broken again, so I had to stop using it. It was working for like 6 months. I'm going to have to stop using it anyway because my license runs out on the 11th and I don't have the money to renew it right now. I only bought one year because I didn't know how much I would end up using it because I hate the way you're forced to type. I prefer the added security of double clicking on the key. Bluetooth keyboards are not an option because I don't own one, and USB keyboards are not an option because a, my mother needs my wireless transmitter for her mouse and b, the pixel 9 family does not come with that nifty little adapter in the box and I gave mine to my mother when she got my old phone.

@JamminJerry Oh, I figured it out. The default settings are just silly. You want global granularity navigation 2 as your gesture style and then you can swipe up to actions, and swipe left/right through the actions.

@dhamlinmusic @JamminJerry While I'm complaining about stuff: is there a trick to reliably find the fingerprint reader? I can't feel it at aall. My ancient six year old android phone had it on the back of the phone. But now it's on the screen and I never ever get it right the first time.

@fastfinge @JamminJerry I have all sound and haptic feedback off, sounds definitely slow it, also turn down verbosity at least 〃 and make sure reduce window announcement delay is on under advanced in talkback, and that handle gestures in talkback is off, if you're not using gesture nav, under developer settings in talkback advanced.

@dhamlinmusic @fastfinge @JamminJerry Thanks for the handle gestures tip. Even though I use TB for around 5 months now this post has been helpful. Just completely cutting the vibration now feels kinda weird but I can get along with no sounds. Would like though if they had it like VoiceOver and you could select which sounds you wanna hear. I don't need constant clicking when focusing on something else, but for a few things it would be useful.

@fastfinge one of the other big things that people do, and I know this, working for two different companies that have carried android phones is that a lot of apple people expect TalkBack to work the same as voiceover, and when it doesn't, they get so mad/frustrated, and complain until the sun goes down. this is why when I do a first training session with someone I flat out ask them if they are coming from an IPhone. if the answer is yes. I spend several minutes with them attempting to get them to reolize that while a few commands are the same, that for the most part, you can't expect it to be the same. if you go into it that way, you will not let yourself learn android. I have been doing this for almost 13 years now, so I am very used to this mindset.
