What screen readers do you use regularly on your Android device? I’m looking for an anecdotal idea of how popular alternative apps on really are. Please boost! Thanks so much for your help.

@aardrian I don't think they federate, so here's the exact numbers in case, like me, you have an actual use for this unscientific data:
Talkback 29 votes 33%
Prudence 2 votes 2%
Jieshuo 6 votes 6%
Other, please say what in a reply 0 votes 0%
I don’t use a screen reader 37 votes 42%
I don’t have an android 13 votes 14%

In short, only TalkBack really matters. If it works with TalkBack, Jieshuo and Prudence would be forced to make it work with them too, because they're small fish. Note that all of my followers speak English, and Prudence and Jieshuo are developed in China, so these numbers are even more meaningless than they already are outside of North America.

@fastfinge @aardrian Prudence also was initially made to bring updated features to devices on older versions of android. I think this also included multi-finger gestures on devices, excluding google and samsung, that could not receive android 12.

@fastfinge I don't think I could handle having to fight with android permissions at random if using a third party screen reader, to be honest.

It's not that I don't want to try but like, this is sounding like SO much hassle... And I'm saying that as a power user of linux that has been using it for the past 10 years.

@xogium So I'm holding off on publishing for a few days, but I think I found the solution. There's a permission called "allow app to modify system settings" in the app info under see all permissions. Once I found and enabled that, it doesn't seem to be losing full control anymore. If it's still stable on Sunday, I'll call it solved. Unfortunately, TalkBack is just so laggy and mushy and annoying that it's worth it to me. Jieshuo is easily five times faster, maybe more, and doesn't crash like TalkBack sometimes does.

@fastfinge Hmm. Interesting. How much does it cost? Is it a one time buy thing, or...

@xogium It’s a subscription. But like 50 bucks for four years.

@fastfinge @xogium See I have never had talkback crash more than twice across 3 models of Pixel, so these issues are confusing me.

@J3317 @fastfinge Yes. I have android 15 on a pixel 6a, and it's laggy as hell with talkback. Feed more than 500 words to google tts engine and the whole thing stupidly falls over dead.
