This question is for people who still use the name their parents gave them. Do you like it? A lot of people, including me, say they don't like their name, and I always wondered if it's a thing like how no one's supposed to like the sound of their own voice.

@Fragglemuppet I actually do. It's common enough that people generally know how to spell and pronounce it. Uncommon enough that I'm often the only one in the room. People don't unintentionally shorten it because there are no well-established nicknames for it. The thought of changing it has never crossed my mind. Thanks mom.

@simon @Fragglemuppet People can mess up even the most common of names. Speaking from personal experience as someone who's been called Sampson, Simon, Samantha, and in one notably bazaar email, Smamuleel. In that last case, I assume...the...backspace key wasn't...working...or...something? You can see they tried, but...I don't even know!

@jonathan859 @Fragglemuppet @simon That and people who decide to just call you a nickname without asking. Does that annoy you, too, Johnny?

@fastfinge @Fragglemuppet @simon Yup, especially if you misspell the nickname, cuz if you call me Jonny, then without h. Oh german people sometimes also put i instead of y but yeah.
Funny enough I used to go by Jonny the first months or so I came into the blind internet community. Though at some point I shifted to Jonathan, and the numbers which stand for my birthdate to aavoid confusion.

@fastfinge @Fragglemuppet @simon But yup, it's annoying as fuck. I'm fine with it when people ask, I'm Jonny for YMCA people, or family, etc.
But now somehow just because someone I know from YMCA works at the same company as I, and he called me Jonny there, which is perfectly fine, other work people started calling me Jonny too. I would say annoying is an understatement, it's actually imature and ridiculous. Same for not beeing able to get a name right. If you're bad with names and have to ask again, well, ok, as long as it's not insanely often, but getting my name wrong, oof. Kinda respectless if you ask me.

@jonathan859 @fastfinge @simon Similar thing happened to me. In middle school I used to go by Kathy but never really liked it. When I joined Muppet Central there was already a prominent Kathy on the forum, so I started going by Kate. I forgot there was also a Kate there, lol, so that's why I said to call me Kate or Katie on here. A lot of places online I'm still Kathy Fraggle.

@fastfinge @simon @Fragglemuppet Rogers rep called me barnson , and it took until my recent phone upgrade almost 12 months to resolve. Aparrently, it's a halarious thing to do, according to the rep I talked to about it in Maple ridge, but two phone reps couldn't fix it wtf man. I don't get how this is funny...

@fastfinge @Fragglemuppet I have a theory: If it's uncommon, people's brains short-circuit. If it's too common, people don't think about it at all, so they mess it up. If it's one of those names you only run across occasionally, people get it right because they're thinking about it, but it's low-effort.
That's all I've got. I mean, of course people manage to get mine wrong sometimes, but it's rare for some reason.
On the other hand, everyone tries to spell my last name with A-R at the end, not E-R. The other day I had to spell it six or seven times.

@simon @fastfinge Wow, I've never seen a last name spelled with an ar at the end. I mean I guess they exist, but they can't be all that common.

Kevan @kev@dragonscave.space

@Fragglemuppet @simon @fastfinge People call me Ke-von, Kee-vin, Ke-van, but it's pronounced Kevin. But they'll spell it with an I too often, when in reality it's K-E-V-A-N.

@Fragglemuppet @fastfinge There's an A after the J, so maybe they expect an A after the G? Again, I'm only speculating. The way brains hold onto information is really interesting.

@simon @fastfinge @Fragglemuppet I have an alternative theory: many humans don't give enough of a shit about other humans to bother getting their names right.

@simon @fastfinge @Fragglemuppet Funny enough Jaeger, or Jäger, in german means hunter. So I would've probably spelled it like that in the 1st place.
