Pet peeve: people mixing up the terms "screen readers" and "screen reader users." The latter rely on the former precisely because they cannot read the screen. It is deeply dehumanising to reference work being done "for screen readers," as though the tools occupy the mind more than the people forced to use them.

@jscholes It is interesting, though, how no blind people seem to humanize our screen readers. I know a type of blind person who names her cane, Brailler, etc. But nobody does the same with a screen reader or Braille display.

@fastfinge What can I say. Our DHCP assignments list will tell you how much we don't name stuff in this house.

@jscholes Eh, my current iPhone 16 pro max is currently named "Samuel's Ipod Touch". Because that's what iTunes named my first iPod touch for me when setting it up. And the name just follows from iCloud restore to device transfer.

@J3317 @jscholes I also have a network share running on Debian named \\windows-server. Because it was too much trouble to update all the network mounts.

@fastfinge @J3317 @jscholes I recall once that I was doing a platform IT service contract for a large national company. Many many pages of legalese. And in the service specification, it started talking about doing Migration from Middle earth to Mordor. I was so confused..turns out all their servers were LOTR references.

@bermudianbrit On one hand, a thumbs-up for workplace whimsy.

On the other, I would be getting annoyed around about the third time I had to look up the region, provider, or purpose of a machine because the names didn't impart useful info. Especially not to someone who's never consumed LOTR.

@jscholes @bermudianbrit @J3317 I'd rather that than a lot of the places I've scene, including my own home, where names never get changed, so toronto1 is in Montreal, and lanbackup is the print server.
