I must be old. I really don't understand emoji reactions. If I say "I'm on the bus and will be there in half an hour" to the group message, why do five people need to react with the bus emoji? A thumbs up or a heart or a smile I get. It communicates some sort of information. You like it, or you're happy, or whatever. But all reacting "bus" communicates is that...the word bus was in the original message, and you recognized it! Yes! Good for you! You recognized the word bus! Do you want a cookie or something?

@fastfinge In my experience, it can be a "holy shit, I think there's an emoji for that" moment.

But yeah, mostly useless.

@tewha So what you're saying is there's at least a couple guys in the group message waiting hopefully for the day when someone, somewhere, mentions an octopus. They'll finally get to use that one!

@fastfinge Afaik, emojis can be a way to express hand gestures and facial expressions that would go with the conversation if it were happening in person.

The bus thing could be nodding or bobbing my head, imagining you on the bus. It might be a variation on the thumbs up for "okay I got it, good news", but without the acknowledgement or praise part (which might seem a bit too much for information about a bus ride). You told me about you being on a bus and now were both thinking about busses. Very soft mirroring (as in mirror neurons). Something like that.

Oh and of course it becomes easier to choose a reaction emoji in a group chat when it's already been selected by someone else. Once you've got one bus, there will be more busses!

You should definitely try talking about an octopus!
