The best thing about quickmail by @kellylford is that it doesn't try to sync and search all of my email like thunderbird does. I'm a data hoarder who has every email I've ever sent or received since 1998. It does say "mail, connected, 2050591 unread" because it's counting messages I archived without reading them, or messages automatic filters move to other folders, and it would be nice if I could only count unread messages in the inbox. But at least it doesn't try to download and index hundreds of gigs of mail the way every other email client wants to, forcing me to race to the settings to fix it before the email client fills up my disc, crashes, or both.

@fastfinge You can disable local syncing at each folder's properties in Thunderbird.

@Lino0876 @kellylford Hey, do you have an original email from an @home.com address, headers fully in tact? No, didn't think so! How about an email from compuserv? Or ibm.net? Or several universities that don't exist anymore? These are collectors items! Someday they're going to be worth...wait, what do you mean people don't collect and trade email headers like they do with stamps? Well, why not!
