Did mozilla make it so Firefox translations only work through AI now? I noticed that the translation option for websites wasn't working anymore, so i investigated and the setting in about:config looks like it's been replaced with an AI thing that i have turned off because i turned all the AI stuff off.

@MLE_online @BorrisInABox I mean translations are AI. Not using an LLM doesn’t mean it’s not machine learning, or not AI. If you don’t want any AI, spell checking, translation, ocr, dictation, grammar checking, smooth scrolling, text to speech, phishing protection, autofill, and autocomplete also have to go.

@fastfinge @BorrisInABox I know that. But they are deliberately conflating AI and LLMs. Most firefox users didn't have an issue with the pre-LLM machine learning features built into firefox. But now they keep heaping LLM stuff into the browser and the button to turn that off also turns off translation.

@MLE_online @BorrisInABox I recall thousands of folks on mastodon angrily demanding that Mozilla remove translation when it was first added. And the outcry when they tried to add image descriptions for blind users was so loud they scrapped the feature. I still don’t use Firefox because I do, in fact, want that. So from where I sit Firefox is giving its users exactly what they screamed they wanted.
