Yesterday I set my Mastodon account to protected and now Mona is defaulting all of my posts to followers only even though I still want the majority of them to be public. Is this a client setting? Something on the server? Something I'm going to spend hours trying to fix and realise everything is just broken?

@jscholes I’m confused. Protected means only followers can see your posts. A public post on a protected account can’t be a thing can it?

@fastfinge Protected means I have to accept follow requests. Setting your post visibility to followers only is what limits the audience, and is less useful without protected mode because anybody can follow you to unlock those posts.

So protected account plus public post means someone can read it by bringing up your profile in a browser or timeline in a client, even if they're not following you.

@jscholes Huh. On my server “approve follow requests” is a different setting. Protected means the server won’t even tell non followers any info about the account like bio etc, and all posts are hidden and boosts and quotes are disallowed. I assumed mastodon was the same.

@fastfinge Yeah, that's on me for using the word "protected" without thinking much about its meaning. The setting I turned off was actually labelled "Automatically accept new followers". I don't know if the other thing you described is available on my server or not.

@jscholes To be fair, Mona misuses it in exactly that way, to my endless frustration. I keep forgetting I’m allowed to boost posts from protected accounts when I’m using Mona.

@jscholes It’s also possible iceshrimp and mastodon are different. I refuse to use mastodon because monocultures are bad, and I want to do my tiny part to keep the fediverse open.
