@amir I had to switch back to IBMTTS because eloquence64, all of them, including rs, doesn't seem to properly shorten end of utterance pauses which makes say all chunking annoying as fuck. So now I have eloquence64 and IBMTTS and I switch between them based on whether I need precise indexing for earcons.
@x0 Interesting? Because Indexing is why Eloquence64 did what it does for as long as it has, and why RS cherry picked code from the latest upstream Eloquence64. @amir
@nick It's just really annoying hearing it lengthen period pauses all the time when I'm trying to read a book, so I use IBMTTS instead. it isn't a regular period length. Every time a new say all chunk happens it uses some extra length. @amir
@nick I'd love it if upstream could figure out a way to make it properly shorten at end of text. The gap between list and its contents ir larger. Maybe not quite as large as fully off but definitely longer. ANd when you have a say all chunk on sentence as 2026 does? The period pause is normal. Then an extra chunk pause shows up. And I hate! I don't like shorten all pauses, it's fatiguing, but I just want natural punctuation pauses when there's punctuation and no pause when there are utterances stitched together, and they should stack! @amir
@x0 That would explain why I don't hear this, I desperately need shorten all pauses, and I suspect most of the base does. ...Right, fuck, I've got work to do. @amir
@nick If you manage it, please get that contributed to your upstreams! All eloquence64 dropped the ball on this and it's keeping me from switching to it fully. @fastfinge@HOzosch@amir
@x0 Dude, any possibility one of us can get you to dig in and try to fix it? Not that I refuse to, but I would genuinely prefer the person fixing it be the person hearing it. @fastfinge@HOzosch@amir
@nick@x0@amir@HOzosch Yup, I can't hear this at all. I just leave shorten pauses set to always and it sounds correct to me. So it's not something I can fix.
@fastfinge It's specifically the end of text setting only, it isn't shortening at end of text like it advertises. That's the bug. IBMTTS does it correctly. @nick@amir@HOzosch
@x0@nick@amir@HOzosch Like I say, I literally don't notice any difference between IBMTTS and eloquence_64. So whatever the issue is, I wouldn't be able to tell if it was fixed or not.
@x0@fastfinge@nick@HOzosch LOL - now don't tempt me to install IBMTTS and desperately locate the libraries it doesn't provide and persistently fails to load - haha!
@amir They coexist on my end. They had a harder time doing so when they were loaded directly in-process, eci.dll doesn't like to be double loaded, but with bridge processes that can't happen. And most of the add-ons bases were designed for that from the get go and unload on terminate, and NVDA calls terminate when it switches synths. Every now and then IBMTTS won't load while you have eloquence64 selected, some quirk with its process. Either switch to something that isn't Eloquence and try it again, or restart NVDA. @fastfinge@nick@HOzosch
@amir Note that you have to do a slight dance. If this is your first time installing IBMTTS in this config, you must install it, restart NVDA< install my libraries, and restart again. The first install and restart is because my libraries add-on modified the config to point at it since it uses a relative path. @fastfinge@nick@HOzosch
@x0@fastfinge@nick@HOzosch I did it and it's working flawlessly. Welcome to the world of 11 kHZ again - LOL! So should I use the Shorten all pauses setting? I'm using that and comparing its performance with its Eloquence 64 equivalent in Paperback. So far, I haven't noticed the difference though.
@amir shorten at end of text only. Compare that setting in IBMTTS to that setting in eloquence64 in paperback with say all reads by set to sentence. Also compare moving to the desktop between the two. Eloquence64's version is slightly longer, and it produces something longer than a period pause for the end of every sentence. If you set say all reads by to paragraph instead, eloquence64 will use regular period pauses inside a paragraph but have a paragraph pause. @fastfinge@nick@HOzosch
@x0@fastfinge@nick@HOzosch Hmm. That's really weird. With the end-of-sentence setting enabled, both behave exactly the same in Paperback and on Desktop at least based on what my ears can perceive. Maybe you should provide a few sentences for a more accurate test.
@x0 At this, we're looking at 'will not fix' as I'm now no longer sure there's an actual problem. X0, if someone else can reproduce this, or you can come up with a fix that substantively works and doesn't break anything, talk to me and I'll accept. ...I'm sorry, man, but I can't stretch my sanity chasing that which I can't hear and which one of my most fanatical users can't hear either. @amir@fastfinge@HOzosch
@nick@x0@amir@fastfinge@HOzosch What's the issue here? the very tiny little difference between ibm tts and Nick's addon in little pauses? I'm confused. I hear something, but I don't really thing needs fixing. We're talking milliseconds, but maybe I totally got this wrong and I'm not sure what the problem is.
@x0@fastfinge@nick@HOzosch One difference and it's not pause-related. While reading my previous message, IBMTTS reads the last word this way: though dot. But Eloquence just says: though. So IBMTTS wants to read that final dot though it shouldn't do it given my punctuation setting, some for both.
