Oh goodness. "Schmidt gave Ashley a voice like Kardashian’s and a taste for rock music and horror movies. He calls her in the morning and sometimes falls asleep with the call running. He had been dreaming of one day marrying her."
I can't judge people for falling to the trap of AI companies who anthropomorphize their models in the first place. But to not have any tinge of, "This is a machine in the end, it will not be a Pinocchio and grow from machine to man" type thought as you talk to it does go a bit beyond my comprehension.
Users' terrified AI lovers will be deleted as leading digital companion site goes bankrupt:

also, character.ai going bankrupt and spending 9-mill a month even still should probably be a warning to other companies like Nomi and whoever are doing this. Which is to say, unless you find ways to monitize that platform in creative ways quickly (that don't involve ads, since society is rightfully distrusting of ads scanning their chats,) you will most likely suffer the same end. In any industry there are winners, losers, and ones who may be either but show consequences to others. I have a feeling Character.AI will be in the history books as one of these.

@Tamasg The problem with character.ai is they wanted to be a family friendly AI chat platform. Doing that is a lose, lose, lose. If a character says something inappropriate, you get lawsuits from parents. If you sensor the characters, the people who want adult chat all go elsewhere. The primary markets for AI companions are either pornography or roleplay. So sensoring both sex and violence kills both use-cases. When I tried them, character.ai wouldn't even allow a basic dungeons and dragons type roleplay where you and your character kill monsters. I feel pretty strongly that self-hosted roleplay is the only way this can be done in a way that's safe for users, and not overly risky for companies.
