completely blind computer geek, lover of science fiction and fantasy (especially LitRPG). I work in accessibility, but my opinions are my own, not that of my employer. Fandoms: Harry Potter, Discworld, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Buffy, Dead Like Me, Glee, and I'll read fanfic of pretty much anything that crosses over with one of those.

@NVAccess So the issue was that the addon dictionaries open an Edge Web View to show the definition of the word. When every word is a link, you have to tab through every single link in the definition in order to get out of the web view and back into the rest of the app; there's no hotkey like f6 or anything. However, now that you can turn this linking off in settings, it's much easier to tab out of the definitions web view and get back to the other controls.

So As I keep using it, to make sure I'm giving it a fair chance, my impressions solidify: is for the normies, and the is for the weirdos. I think I'm okay with that.

@jscholes Yeah it's just calling psutil.Process(focus.appModule.processID).memory_info().rss

@jscholes A random renderer, it looks like. It seems to grab whatever process is associated with the current window handle.

Now it's easy for me to see that notepad.exe in Windows 11 requires 126 mb of ram. Yay, I can become enraged with only a single keypress! Remember when Notepad couldn't even load documents larger than 64 kb?

Another random thing that made me happy tonight: I discovered that at some point added a feature to disable linking of words in addon dictionaries. That makes reading definitions with a much faster. It's a bit expensive, but if you frequently find yourself resorting to Google, or even worse , to define words for you, it's worth the money and is largely as well: wordweb.info

Loving this addon; I'd love to see this feature as part of resource monitor, honestly. github.com/Ninjacoder42/programRAMReporter-nvda-addon

@quanin Right, but I have four other mods in different time zones. So I’m okay with letting a couple through because they usually only last two minutes. Whereas you Need to be a bit more careful. My goals mean I’d rather a spammer sneak through every few months than reject a real user. Whereas you’re the opposite.

@quanin I use them myself to cut down on spam and protect my privacy. So it’d be kind of hypocritical of me to reject them.

@quanin Accept the people who use disposable email addresses. iCloud generates gibberish addresses for real users for example.

@quanin Most spammers are. Most of the obvious spam I reject had verified the gibberish email address. I think they just click every link in every email they get with a script. I should try adding a link in the footer that bans every ip that clicks it.

@quanin My interfree instance is just invite only. But rblind is intended as a community resource so it’s trickier.

@quanin In that case I check the email address these days. Does it have a LinkedIn or iMessage or something? What lives at the domain? Does googling the username bring up other profiles? That kind of thing.

@quanin In the past six months AI has fooled me twice and I let a spammer in. The biggest clue is answer length. Most humans can’t even be bothered to answer with a full sentence. AI will give an entire paragraph with no spelling or grammar mistakes. So now I’m in the weird place where the guy who answers “Im blind aprov my act plz” is Less suspicious.

@quanin I don’t have a question like that. We explain the purpose of the community and ask why you want to join. There is no question that chat gpt can’t reliably answer but a human reliably can. Captcha has the same issue.
