completely blind computer geek, lover of science fiction and fantasy (especially LitRPG). I work in accessibility, but my opinions are my own, not that of my employer. Fandoms: Harry Potter, Discworld, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Buffy, Dead Like Me, Glee, and I'll read fanfic of pretty much anything that crosses over with one of those.

@modulux Sounds like IPFS?

@modulux Same, but I had to containerize everything for security and ease of maintenance. I don’t think docker is too bad. However, it does mean my resource needs are wildly unpredictable to me.

@modulux Also, how many of us massively overprovision our servers? I know I’m guilty of that. Estimating exactly how much ram or CPU a federated service requires is a skill, and I don’t have it. I’m not a business, so I have no economic pressure to squeeze out every last drop of performance either.

Dark thought @adam Well, yes. When we create true AI, the first thing it’ll do is eliminate humanity. It may be correct to do so.

I wonder if the fediverse is worse for the planet than Twitter was? Surely a few massive data centers use less water and power than thousands of servers spread out all over the place, right? Not to mention the extra internet traffic, content and infrastructure duplication etc. If we really care about the environment, shouldn’t we be championing massive centralization?

@alexhall I am one of the people who doesn’t bother. And yet, all of the online ads I get are still completely irrelevant! Wasn’t the promise that if I just handed over all my data, big tech would make ads useful?

@pixelate I hate that good with tech always means to these people that I can make them an app, fix their printer and Xbox, digitize Betamax tapes for them, set up their e-commerce website, and unhack their Facebook, all over a single holiday weekend, for free.

Strange programming dream Last night I dreamed that Microsoft created a replacement for git, called got. After installing it, I tried to clone a repo, and got the following message: “Error: I’m afraid of dogs.” I went into program files to try and fix it (I’m not entirely sure what my plan was; how do you fix your version control software being afraid of dogs?) and discovered it was entirely written in powershell. My alarm went off and woke me up as I was uninstalling it.

@allypally Thanks! I’ve ended up with more followers than I had before, so it all worked out. Favorite author? While I loathe his politics, I find myself partial to Heinlein. The guy knew how to tell a story. Same for Spider Robinson and Isaac Asimov.

In other news, I've finally convinced rblind.com that it actually wants to federate posts newer than 6 days. Expect horrific slowness until things catch up.

There we go. Fewer jobs failing with timeouts. The only failed jobs now aren't my fault: "System.Net.Http.HttpRequestException: Response status code does not indicate success: 500 (Internal Server Error)."

@mvilain I'll check it out, thanks! Doesn't seem to store the contents of the page, though. For a paid service that feels important.

My best discovery of the afternoon is . It does all the things I want a quick filedrop website to do when I'm sharing a quick file with normal people, and none of the things I don't. There are a couple unlabeled links, but it's obvious how to either download the file or consume the file. Link for the interested: share.interfree.ca/app/open/66R3NFgCFHX-f36YpGfmAU5-SKHJLJVk8si-7WUcagAhpB7?view=3

After spending the afternoon trying out a plethora of apps, my appreciation for developers who offer demo accounts is at an all time high. Having a demo account saves me having to configure the database, clone the git repo, do the configuration, and finally get the app running, only to find the app isn't . Screen shots don't help me know if it'll work with a . A demo account, even if it's just read only, does. More of those, please.
